Gullivers in the community: Pumpkin seed planting project

Gullivers is a place where people, animal and the soil matters. Our principles are deeply rooted in everything we do. From the sustainable farming methods we use every day to supporting adults living with additional needs. We believe in empowering people and providing a supportive environment to help them shine.

Recently, we got the opportunity to share our knowledge with a local school, St Mary’s CE First School and Nursery in West Moors. The children came to the farm, visited the animals and planted some pumpkin seeds. Headteacher Roy Sewell explains a little more about the initiative.

You recently collaborated with the teams at Gullivers and Sturts Farm for a morning of pumpkin seed sowing. What inspired the project?

We wanted to provide our children with hands-on learning opportunities beyond the classroom and foster a connection with nature. The project aimed to teach them about the lifecycle of plants and the importance of sustainable farming practices.

How did the children respond to the experience?

The children’s reaction was truly heart-warming. They were excited and engaged throughout the process. From planting the seeds to nurturing the growing pumpkins.

Anticipating the seeds they had sown, transforming into vibrant plants, filled them with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It sparked their curiosity and deepened their appreciation for the natural world around them.

Why are projects like these so important in the community?

Project like these hold immense importance in our community for several reasons. Firstly they provide meaningful experiences that go beyond traditional classroom learning, enabling children to connect with their environment and develop a sense of responsibility towards nature. It fosters a love for the outdoors and promotes a sustainable mindset from an early age.

Secondly, community partnerships like the one with Sturts Farm and Gullivers Farm Shop created a sense of belonging and shared purpose. They strengthen the bonds between our school, local businesses and organisations, promoting a collaborative spirit and a support network for the betterment of our community.

Lastly, such projects help instil values like empathy, compassion and social responsibility in our students. By engaging with the local community, they learn about different perspectives, appreciate diversity and understand the significance of giving back and making a positive impact on others’ lives.

What one change could we all make to make the world a better place?

Cultivating a culture of kindness and empathy. By practising empathy in our daily lives, we can develop understanding and appreciation for others, fostering harmonious relationships and a more compassionate society.

Encouraging acts of kindness, no matter how small, can have a ripple effect, positively influencing the lives of those around us and creating a more inclusive and caring world.

It was so fun and we learnt lots! I liked getting my hands dirty.

I loved it! I enjoyed mushing up the clumpy dirt and seeing how big the pumpkin seeds were.
